EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 46, featuring the White- and Black-winged Robber-fly, Asilus germanicus (now Pamponerus germanicus. The fly is depicted in exquisite detail, with its long, slender body, distinctive wings, and menacingly large eyes. The White-winged Robber-fly, as its name suggests, has translucent wings, while the Black-winged Robber-fly boasts opaque black wings. Both species belong to the family Asilidae, also known as robber flies, which are known for their predatory behavior. The fly is shown perched on the stem of a beautiful climbing plant, identified as Corydalis claviculata, also known as Fumaria claviculata or Climbing Fumitory. This plant was commonly found in the British countryside during the 1820s and 1830s, and its delicate, bell-shaped flowers were a favorite among early botanical illustrators. This plate is a testament to the remarkable work of John Curtis (1791-1862), a prominent British naturalist and entomologist, who dedicated his life to documenting the natural world. The plate was produced between 1824 and 1839, during the 19th century, a time when the study of insects was gaining significant attention and advancements in scientific exploration. The intricately detailed illustration showcases the remarkable precision and skill of the artist, who expertly captured the essence of both the White- and Black-winged Robber-fly and the delicate beauty of the Climbing Fumitory. This plate is a valuable addition to any collection of natural history or entomology, and a testament to the rich biodiversity of the British Isles during the 19th century.
