EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Circular crab (Atelecyclus rotundatus 1) and Swimming crab (Portunus latipes 2)" is an exquisite illustration from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Sciences," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The Circular crab, also known as the Seven-toothed Circular crab or the Dorsettensis crab, is depicted in the center of the image, displaying its distinctive circular carapace. The Swimming crab, also known as the Variegated Swimming crab or the Spider crab, is shown in the lower right corner, with its long legs extended, ready to propel itself through the water. Turpin, who directed the creation of this illustration, was a leading figure in French botanical illustration during the 19th century. His meticulous attention to detail and mastery of the stipple engraving technique are evident in the intricate textures and shading of the crabs' exoskeletons and the delicate patterns on their legs. The image also includes a number of annotated labels, identifying the crabs as Ateleciclo con sette denti (Circular crab with seven teeth) and Portunno variegato (Variegated Swimming crab), as well as various other marine creatures, such as the Inachus (a type of crab), Dorynchus (a type of crab), Scorpio (a scorpion), Phalangium (a type of spider), and the Inaco (a type of crab). This beautiful and historically significant illustration offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the early 19th century and the remarkable artistry of its creators.
