Victory Loan Bonds MCF01_02_0594
Trafalgar Square, St James, Westminster, City of Westminster, Greater London. A view from the steps of St Martin-in-the-Fields Church towards a large crowd of people gathered in Trafalgar Square to buy Victory Loan bonds.
After the First World War the British government was heavily in debt and one of the ways they raised money was by selling Victory Loan bonds and certificates to the public. At this event, tents were erected in Trafalgar Square with bunting and patriotic slogans attached to Nelsons Column to advertise the sale of the bonds. This photograph is one of a group the photographer took in Trafalgar Square on the same day showing people buying Victory Loan bonds at about midday and then later on celebrating peace at about 6pm

This print captures a significant moment in British history, showcasing the aftermath of World War I and the nation's efforts to recover from its immense debt. Standing on the steps of St Martin-in-the-Fields Church, one can witness a sea of people gathered in Trafalgar Square, eagerly purchasing Victory Loan bonds. These bonds were instrumental in financing the government and aiding their recovery. The scene is adorned with vibrant tents displaying patriotic slogans attached to Nelson's Column, creating an atmosphere brimming with national pride and unity. The bunting fluttering overhead adds a touch of festivity to this monumental event. Taken by photographer Katherine MacFee, this image is part of a series capturing various moments throughout the day. Here we see individuals flocking towards these tents at midday, determined to contribute towards rebuilding their country. Later that evening, as depicted in other photographs from this collection, jubilation fills Trafalgar Square as peace celebrations commence. This snapshot serves as a poignant reminder not only of financial investments but also of the indomitable spirit and resilience displayed by ordinary citizens during challenging times.
