The War in Denmark: view of Aalborg, in Jutland, now occupied by the Prussian army, 1864. Engraving of a sketch '...by Mr. C. Murray from the pleasure-gardens to the south of the town, looking across the Lumfjorden to the opposite town of Sundby...The town of Aalborg, which is the principal place in Jutland, [is] now occupied by the Prussian and Austrian troops. Aalborg is situated on the south side of the narrow entrance of the Lumfjord (pronounced Lymfiord), a vast inland lake, which is connected by straits and firths both with the German Ocean and the Baltic, thus separating the most northerly part of Jutland from the mainland of that peninsula, and enabling vessels which draw 12 ft. of water to pass from the North Sea into the Cattegat. The town itself contains about ten thousand inhabitants. It is the seat of a bishopric, and has a gymnasium or college, a good library, a school of navigation, an hospital, and several other public institutions. A considerable trade is carried on, and a productive herring fishery; the town derives its name from the immense quantities of eels which are taken in the neighbouring waters'. EDITORS COMMENTS
**A City Under Occupation: Aalborg, Jutland, Denmark (1864)**
This poignant print captures a moment of turmoil in Danish history. In the midst of the Second Schleswig War, Prussian and Austrian troops have occupied the city of Aalborg, once a thriving hub on the southern shore of Lumfjorden. The photograph shows a desolate view from pleasure gardens to the south, with Sundby town visible across the water.
Aalborg's streets are now empty and quiet, devoid of its usual bustle as thousands of inhabitants go about their daily lives under foreign occupation. Once home to institutions like a bishopric, gymnasium, library, school of navigation, hospital, and more public facilities, the city is now eerily still. The once-thriving trade and herring fishery have likely come to a standstill.
This haunting image serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of war on innocent civilians. As we gaze upon this 19th-century scene, let us honor those who suffered during times of conflict and strive for peace in our own world today.
