Uzume, the Goddess of Mirth and Revelry, is depicted in this exquisite hand-carved wooden sculpture by Chingendo Hidemasa from the early 19th century. Uzume is a central figure in Shinto mythology, known for her role in calming the angry god Amaterasu, who had withdrawn from the world, plunging it into darkness.
