"The Ivory Carver" - painted by E. H. Wehnert, 1857. Charles Boxer, an American poet of some reputation, has furnished the subject of the picture by Mr. Wehnert...The "Ivory Carver" is the name of the poem from which the incident is taken. The Carver, inspired by that devotional feeling which is known to have possessed many of those who have engaged upon works of a religious character, has abandoned himself entirely to the production of an ivory Christ, and in the accomplishment of this single object has allowed wife and children to perish from want. The bereaved husband and parent at last overcome the enthusiast, and he gives utterance to impious upbraidings upon the death of his children'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

The Ivory Carver,

EDITORS COMMENTS
painted by E. H. Wehnert in 1857, is a poignant and thought-provoking artwork that tells a story of devotion, obsession, and the consequences of artistic passion. The subject of the painting is inspired by a poem of the same name by American poet Charles Boxer. In the painting, the carver, deeply engrossed in creating an intricately detailed ivory Christ figure, has neglected his responsibilities as a husband and father. His wife and children have succumbed to poverty and hunger, but the carver remains undeterred, lost in his artistic pursuit. The image captures the carver in a moment of intense focus, his arms raised and gesturing towards his masterpiece. The ivory figure of Christ, crucified and crucifixion-like in its intricacy, is the object of his unwavering attention. The carver's posture and expression convey a sense of deep regret and anguish, as he is overcome by the reality of his neglectful actions. The painting is a powerful commentary on the power of art and the potential for obsession to consume one's life. "The Ivory Carver" was first exhibited in the Illustrated London News in 1857 and has since become a significant work in the history of art and craftsmanship. The hand-carved detail and intricacy of the ivory figure are a testament to Wehnert's skill and dedication to his craft. The painting is a haunting reminder of the sacrifices that can be made in the pursuit of artistic excellence and the importance of balancing passion with responsibility. This photograph is an engraving of the original painting and serves as a valuable addition to any art, history, or religious collection. The image is a snapshot of a moment in time, frozen in history, and invites viewers to reflect on the timeless themes of art, devotion, and the human condition.
