EDITORS COMMENTS
In this powerful engraving by Philip Galle (1575), three esteemed apostles - St Peter, St John and St Philip - lay their hands on newly baptized believers at Samaria. The scene is a culmination of the conversion process depicted in Acts 8:12-18, where people from all walks of life came to faith through the preaching of Apostle Philip. As they were baptised 'both men and women', Simon the Sorcerer among them, this moment marks their official entry into the Christian community. The apostles' blessing is a symbol of divine approval and empowerment for these new followers of Christ.
In the background, more acts of conversion are taking place - a testament to the widespread impact of Philip's ministry. Above all, however, it is the dove representing the Holy Spirit that dominates this composition, emphasizing God's role in guiding and empowering those who would follow Jesus. This beautiful engraving not only captures a pivotal moment from Scripture but also serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of faith.
