EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite painting, created by the renowned Italian artist Bernardino Luini between 1516 and 1517, depicts three revered saints: Martha, Catherine, and Barbara. The work is currently housed in the Muzeum Narodowe in Krakow, Poland. Martha, represented on the left, is shown in the traditional pose of a servant, holding a jug and a towel, symbolizing her dedication to hospitality and her role as a patron saint of domestic workers. Her sister, Mary Magdalene, is often mistakenly depicted instead of Martha in similar compositions, but this painting accurately portrays Martha from the New Testament story of the "Mystic Marriage of the Magdalen." In the center, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, a renowned scholar and martyr, is depicted seated on a throne, holding a palm branch and the wheel, an instrument of her martyrdom. Her halo is adorned with the cross and the spiked wheel, symbolizing her strength and resilience in the face of persecution. On the right, Saint Barbara, the patron saint of artillerymen, is depicted as a young woman, holding a palm branch and a tower, symbolizing her virginity and her miraculous escape from her father's plans to marry her off against her will. Luini's masterful use of color and light, as well as his intricate attention to detail, are characteristic of the Milanese School of the Renaissance. The painting's rich symbolism and beautiful composition make it a treasured work of fine art, beloved by scholars and art enthusiasts alike.
