EDITORS COMMENTS
This sketch, titled 'The Royal Yacht Squadron Saluting the French Squadron - sketched by the Hon. Dudley Pelham, 1850,' transports us back to a time of grand naval traditions and diplomatic gestures. The image showcases a breathtaking scene of French and British warships assembled off the coast of Cherbourg for a naval review. The meticulous detail in the boats, steamers, and yachts, as well as the multitude of onlookers gathered on the piers, wharfs, roofs, and shores, adds to the vibrant atmosphere of the event. The scene unfolds as the sun rises, with 'yachts now beginning to weigh' and 'boats commencing to ply.' The harbor comes alive with the hustle and bustle of activity, as steamers filled with various cargo steam out from the harbor, round the fleet, and through the yachts. The day commenced with a regatta open to all gigs, and several English Yacht Squadron gigs participated in the race. The Hon. Dudley Pelham, an accomplished artist, skillfully captured this moment in history for the Illustrated London News in 1850. The engraving showcases the stunning beauty of the English Channel, the grandeur of the naval fleet, and the rich traditions of yachting and naval warfare during the Victorian era. This piece of history offers a glimpse into the past, providing a unique perspective on the diplomatic relations between France and Britain during the 19th century.
