EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th century Okimono, in the form of the jovial deity Hotei, is a fine example of the Hirado Mikawachi ware from Japan. The figure, with its distinctive overweight belly and rosy cheeks, is a representation of the God of Happiness and Contentment in East Asian mythology. Hotei is also known as Fukusuke or Fukwang, and is one of the Seven Lucky Gods, or Shichi Fukujin. The ceramic sculpture, with its clear glaze, showcases intricate details in the depiction of Hotei's flowing robes and the folds of his stomach. His left hand holds a fan, while his right hand is extended in a gesture of blessing. The deity's serene expression and the gentle curve of his belly convey a sense of calm and contentment. The Okimono, which translates to "plaything" or "curio," was a popular form of decorative art in Japan during the Edo period. These figurines were often made of porcelain and were highly prized for their intricate details and beautiful glazes. The figure of Hotei is a beloved symbol of happiness and good fortune, and was often placed in homes and temples as a talisman. This beautiful work of art is currently housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it is admired by visitors from around the world. The close-up image showcases the intricacies of the ceramic work, inviting viewers to appreciate the details of the deity's form and the craftsmanship of the piece. The studio shot highlights the rich colors and textures of the ceramic, making it a true treasure of Asian art and heritage.
