Mr. Baron Bramwell, the New Judge, Court of Exchequer, from a sketch taken in court, 1856. Creator: Unknown
Mr. Baron Bramwell, the New Judge, Court of Exchequer, from a sketch taken in court, 1856. As Sir George Bramwell could hardly have been much above twenty-four or twenty-five years old when he was called to the bar in 1838 he must be, as he looks, in the prime of life. His figure is tall and slight, but he is strongly built and full of vigour....there is no doubt that [he] will justify the expectations which have been formed of his future career as a Judge...He has also been not less distinguished as a law reformer than as a lawyer. He was an active member of the commission to inquire into the best means for simplifying the procedure of the Common Law Courts; and to him...the country owes the present comparatively simple and inexpensive process in actions at law, which has caused the Courts at Westminster to enter into formidable competition with the County Courts...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
[Caption] This photograph print features Sir George Bramwell, the New Judge of the Court of Exchequer, as depicted in a sketch taken during court proceedings in 1856. At the time of this sketch, Sir George was likely in his prime, having been called to the bar only a few decades prior in 1838. His stature is tall and slender, yet he exudes strength and vitality. Sir George's legal prowess was evident from an early age, and his future as a Judge was highly anticipated. His reputation as a skilled lawyer was matched by his commitment to law reform. He was an active member of the commission tasked with investigating the most effective methods for simplifying the procedures of the Common Law Courts. The country owes a significant debt to Sir George for his role in the development of the present, relatively straightforward and cost-effective process in actions at law. This reform has resulted in fierce competition between the Westminster Courts and the County Courts. Despite his young age, Sir George's contributions to the legal field were already noteworthy. His dedication to improving the legal system and making it more accessible to the public further solidified his standing as a respected and influential figure in the legal community. This photograph offers a glimpse into the life of an exceptional individual who left a lasting impact on the English legal system.
