Marconi, c1893. Creator: James Lafayette
Marconi, c1893. Portrait of Italian physicist and inventor Guglielmo Marconi
(1874-1937). Marconi discovered a way in which waves could be used to send messages from one place to another without wires or cables. Having read about Heinrich Hertzs work with electromagnetic waves, he began experiments of his own, and in 1894 successfully sounded a buzzer 9 metres away from where he stood. In 1902 Marconi sent a radio signal across the Atlantic in Morse code. Five years later, a Canadian scientist, Reginald Fessenden, transmitted a human voice by radio for the first time. Marconis inventiveness and business skills made radio communication a practical proposition. From the collection of Felix Potin

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned Italian physicist and inventor, Guglielmo Marconi, captured by James Lafayette in 1893. Marconi's groundbreaking discovery revolutionized communication as we know it today. Inspired by Heinrich Hertz's work with electromagnetic waves, Marconi embarked on his own experiments to transmit messages wirelessly. In 1894, he achieved a significant milestone by successfully sounding a buzzer from a distance of nine meters. Marconi's ingenuity didn't stop there; in 1902, he astounded the world by sending a radio signal across the vast Atlantic Ocean using Morse code. This remarkable feat paved the way for global communication through wireless technology. Five years later, another scientist named Reginald Fessenden transmitted human voice via radio for the first time. Marconi's brilliance extended beyond scientific breakthroughs; his business acumen played an instrumental role in making radio communication practical and accessible to all. His contributions earned him prestigious recognition including the Nobel Prize. This vintage photograph is part of Felix Potin's collection and serves as a testament to Marconi's immense impact on telecommunications during the late 19th century Victorian era. It captures not only his profession but also his determination and relentless pursuit of innovation that forever changed how people connect across countries and continents.
