Mademoiselle Johanna Wagner as "Romeo", at Her Majesty's Theatre, 1856. German opera singer in London stage production. For the splendid triumph achieved by her on this occasion Mdlle. Wagner was not indebted to the merits of the opera, which is among the weakest of the many weak productions of the modern Italian stage. It is one of Bellini's earliest pieces, composed while his powers were yet immature...She is a beauty of the genuine Saxon type, with blue eyes...and a profusion of fair hair. She is above the ordinary female stature, exquisitely formed, and free and graceful in every movement. When she appeared in the chivalrous attire of the youthful Romeo, a burst of admiration shook the house...When, at length, her voice was heard, its rich, deep contralto tones, in a piece of spoken recitative, completed the spell wrought by her aspect'. Mademoiselle Johanna Wagner as 'Romeo' at Her Majesty's Theatre, 1856
EDITORS COMMENTS
is an intriguing photographic print that captures the enchanting moment when the German opera singer made her London stage debut as the legendary character from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The creator of this image remains unknown, but the description from the "Illustrated London News" published in 1856 provides a vivid account of the scene. Mademoiselle Wagner's performance at Her Majesty's Theatre was a triumph, not due to the merits of the opera itself, which was considered one of the weaker productions of the modern Italian stage. Instead, it was the captivating presence and extraordinary talent of the singer that left the audience in awe. Described as a "beauty of the genuine Saxon type," Mademoiselle Wagner boasted blue eyes and an abundance of fair hair. Her stature was above average, and her form was exquisite, with every movement radiating freedom and grace. The moment she appeared on stage in the chivalrous attire of the young Romeo, the house erupted in admiration. But it was when her voice was heard that the audience was truly spellbound. Her rich, deep contralto tones, delivered in a piece of spoken recitative, left an indelible impression on the audience. This photographic print serves as a testament to the mesmerizing power of Mademoiselle Johanna Wagner's performance, a moment in time that continues to captivate and inspire.
