EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Grover Cleveland, the 22nd and 24th President of the United States during the late 19th century. Taken in 1955, this colorized image brings to life a remarkable statesman who left an indelible mark on American history. Grover Cleveland served as President from 1885-1889 and again from 1893-1897, making him the only President to leave office and then be re-elected for another term later. As a Democrat, he was elected after the American Civil War, becoming the first Democrat to hold office during that time. However, his second term was preceded by defeat in the presidential election of 1888 against Benjamin Harrison. In this portrait captured by renowned photographer Mathew Brady, we see a distinguished man with a prominent mustache exuding strength and determination. His face reflects both wisdom gained through experience and an unwavering commitment to serving his country. Grover Cleveland's legacy extends beyond his political achievements; he is remembered as a symbol of resilience and perseverance. This print serves as a testament to his enduring impact on American politics and society. The photograph comes from James D Horan's book "Mathew Brady Historian with a Camera" published in New York in 1955. Its colorization adds vibrancy to an already powerful image, allowing us to connect more intimately with one of America's most influential leaders.
