Devant l'envahisseur; Le général Leman, défenseur de Liège
EDITORS COMMENTS
(Before the Invader; General Leman, Defender of Liège) is a striking photograph from the first world war era, taken by the French photographer Henneber in 1914. The image captures the determined and resolute face of General Georges Leman, Count of Gerard Mathieu Joseph Leman (1856-1916), who played a pivotal role in the defense of Liège during the early stages of the war. The Siege of Liège, which lasted from August 5 to August 17, 1914, was one of the first major battles on the Western Front of World War I. The city of Liège, located in eastern Belgium, was a key strategic point for the German forces, who sought to quickly advance towards Paris. General Leman, the commander of the Belgian forces in the region, put up a fierce resistance, inflicting significant losses on the invading German army. In this photograph, General Leman is depicted wearing the uniform of a Belgian army officer, complete with a cap adorned with a distinctive headdress. His intense gaze and stern expression convey a sense of unwavering resolve and determination in the face of the enemy. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the courage and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought in the early days of the First World War, and the crucial role that Belgium played in the defense of Europe against the German invasion. The photograph was first published in the French magazine "L'Illustration" in 1924, as part of a series of photographs documenting the events of the First World War. Today, it remains an important historical document, shedding light on a pivotal moment in the history of the 20th century.
