The cricket-match between Madras and Calcutta: the Madras Eleven, 1864. Creator: Unknown
The cricket-match between Madras and Calcutta: the Madras Eleven, 1864. Engraving from a photograph by Mr. B. Smith, of the '...portraits of eleven members of the Madras Cricket Club who lately went to Calcutta to play against the Calcutta Cricket Club. Attempts had been made in previous years to bring the two elevens together, but were discountenanced by the absurd notion...that a good seat in the saddle or a good hit to square leg is evidence of an idle disposition in the members of the civil service. It required some courage to make the announcement that eleven men wanted permission to leave their Presidency for such a frivolous pursuit as a game of cricket...The total score for Madras in both innings...was 265; and for Calcutta, both innings, 204. Madras, therefore, remained the winner by no less a majority than 61. The Madras Eleven consisted of Mr. H. Linton, Mr. P. Hutchins, Captain Jago, Mr. E. W. Breeks, Mr. F. Brandt, Captain Beckley, Mr. R. Melville, Captain Liardet, Captain Hope, Mr. G. Leman, and Captain Hallett. Mr. Linton is the gentleman with a handkerchief about his head, and with his bare arms crossed, who stands in the middle, being the fourth of the standing figures; Captain Beckley stands at his left hand'. A Moment of Triumph - The Madras Eleven Victorious in Calcutta, 1864
EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a pivotal moment in cricket history - the match between the Madras and Calcutta Cricket Clubs. In this iconic image, we see the proud members of the Madras Eleven standing tall after their triumphant victory over their opponents from Calcutta.
The year was 1864, and despite initial skepticism about leaving their presidency for a "frivolous pursuit" like cricket, these eleven men demonstrated remarkable courage in pursuing their passion. The result? A resounding win by no less than 61 runs! Mr. H. Linton stands out with his distinctive handkerchief wrapped around his head, while Captain Beckley proudly stands at his left side.
This photograph not only commemorates a significant sporting achievement but also reflects the camaraderie and sportsmanship that defined these early cricket enthusiasts. The image has been beautifully rendered by an unknown artist from a photograph taken by Mr. B. Smith, showcasing the skillful engraving techniques of the time.
As we gaze upon this vintage print, we are transported to a era when British colonialism was at its peak, and sports like cricket were becoming increasingly popular among expatriates in India. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the power of sport to bring people together across cultures and borders.
