The Crater of Mount Etna - from a drawing by S. Read, 1860. Etna, celebrated from the most remote antiquity for its magnitude and its volcanic eruptions, is situated in the north-eastern part of Sicily..."The snow had melted from the sides of the cone...we clambered over large beds of lava, which were twisted and thrown up in most extraordinary shapes...We now began the ascent...our feet sinking into hot sulphur and ashes at every step. Respiration became difficult, from two causes: we were now almost 10, 000 feet above the sea; and the fumes of sulphur which issued from numerous little holes, and from the holes which our feet made, nearly choked us...a deep underground sound, like very distant thunder, told us unmistakably that Etna was not quite at rest within. Immediately after the shock we noticed a fresh stream of sulphurous vapour issue out from the sulphur within a foot or two of where we were sitting...It was no unimpressive moment of our lives when, standing on the crater's brink...we looked into the deep hollow beneath, mysteriously sending forth its waving columns of smoke...The sides appeared very precipitous, but we were disabled from looking down to any considerable depth by the swiftly-rising clouds of smoke...". EDITORS COMMENTS
Mount Etna, renowned since ancient times for its grandeur and volcanic eruptions, is situated in the northeastern part of Sicily. This image is a drawing by S. Read, published in the Illustrated London News in 1860, and beautifully captured by M. Jackson. The drawing depicts the awe-inspiring crater of Mount Etna, with its fiery heart belching out plumes of smoke and ash. The scene is described in the accompanying text as having once been covered in snow, but now revealing a desolate landscape of solidified lava flows, twisted and contorted into extraordinary shapes. The intrepid explorers, who penned these words, share their firsthand account of their ascent. They describe the challenge of climbing over the jagged lava beds, the labored breathing due to the high altitude and the suffocating fumes of sulfur. The ground beneath their feet sizzled with the heat, and the air was filled with the ominous rumble of the volcano's restless heart. As they reached the crater's edge, they were met with a breathtaking sight: a deep, hollow expanse, shrouded in swirling clouds of smoke. The sides of the crater appeared steep and treacherous, but the thick, choking smoke prevented them from looking too deeply into its depths. The explorers stood in awe, gazing into the mysterious abyss, feeling the ground tremble beneath their feet as Etna continued to rumble and roar, a testament to the raw power of nature.
