Bust of the late Viscount Hardinge, by J. H. Foley, in the Royal Academy Exhibition, 1860. Creator: Unknown
Bust of the late Viscount Hardinge, by J. H. Foley, in the Royal Academy Exhibition, 1860. The sterling qualities of the late Viscount Hardinge, Commander-in-Chief, were highly esteemed by her Majesty, whose regard for the gallant veteran almost ripened into friendship. He was in attendance on her Majesty, as we all know, at the moment when he was seized with the sudden attack of indisposition which terminated fatally. Desirous to procure a memorial of this honest and high-minded public servant, the Queen could not have given the commission to better hands than those of Mr. Foley, who has produced a bust remarkable alike for the truth of the likeness and the simple dignity of the character displayed in it. This fine work of sculptured portraiture was in the Royal Academy Exhibition...and is intended to be placed in the corridor at Windsor Castle'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image from the annals of Victorian history, we find the Bust of the Late Viscount Hardinge, sculpted by the esteemed artist J. H. Foley, showcased at the Royal Academy Exhibition in 1860. The late Viscount Hardinge, a gallant veteran and esteemed Commander-in-Chief, held a special place in the heart of Queen Victoria. Their relationship was not only professional but had grown into a deep regard, bordering on friendship. The momentous occasion of the Queen's esteem for Viscount Hardinge was captured in this remarkable sculpture, created posthumously. The bust was commissioned by the Queen herself, who, in her grief, sought a fitting memorial of this honest and high-minded public servant. Foley, a master of his craft, did not disappoint. His work is a testament to the truth of the likeness and the simple dignity of the character displayed in it. The bust, a fine example of sculptured portraiture, was met with great admiration during its exhibition at the Royal Academy. Its intended destination was the corridor at Windsor Castle, a fitting tribute to a man who had dedicated his life to service. The Illustrated London News, in its report on the exhibition, praised Foley's work for its exceptional accuracy and the profound sense of character it conveyed. This evocative image offers a glimpse into the past, a poignant reminder of a time when art and royal patronage intertwined to immortalize the memory of a great man.
