Barren Island, in the Bay of Bengal, 1858. Creator: Unknown
Barren Island, in the Bay of Bengal, 1858. This island...north-east of the Andaman Islands...was visited by the Hon. East India Company's steam-frigate Semiramis...and the British ensign was planted on the summit of the volcanic cone...Slight volcanic action is taking place at three points on the summit...The three smaller craters are approachable; the feet, however, sinking below the ankles in soft sulphurous matter around the fissures whence the vapour rises. The crystallised masses of sulphur are very beautiful. Large quantities of sulphur, in almost a pure state, might be collected, which would be of value as an export...The island is well covered with trees and grass, and on the beach a few cocoanut-trees were seen, which had doubtless been planted by the crew of some vessel passing. At the landing-place there is a small streamlet of water, at a temperature above 200 Fahr. which discharges itself into the sea, and causes the curious phenomenon of a huge warm or tepid bath being available in the ocean; and most enjoyable it was found to be, after the ascent and descent of the cone...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Barren Island, Bay of Bengal, 1858: A Volcanic Haven This photograph portrays Barren Island, a mesmerizing volcanic island located in the Bay of Bengal, north-east of the Andaman Islands. The image was captured during a visit by the Honourable East India Company's steam-frigate Semiramis in 1858. The British ensign proudly flies atop the summit of the island's volcanic cone, marking the British exploration of this remote and intriguing land. Slight volcanic activity is evident at three points on the summit, with three smaller craters visible. Approaching these craters, however, reveals a challenge as the soft sulphurous matter around the fissures causes feet to sink below the ankles. The crystallized masses of sulphur that surround the craters are a sight to behold, their beauty a testament to the island's unique geological features. Barren Island is richly covered in trees and grass, with a few coconut trees gracing the beach. These trees were likely planted by the crew of passing vessels, adding a touch of greenery to the otherwise barren landscape. Near the landing place, a small streamlet of water emerges, discharging itself into the sea at a temperature above 200 degrees Fahrenheit. This warm water creates a large, warm or tepid bath in the ocean, providing a most enjoyable respite after the arduous ascent and descent of the cone. This photograph, taken from "Illustrated London News" in 1858, offers a glimpse into the wonders of Barren Island and the natural phenomena that make it a truly unique destination. [End of Caption]
