Arrival of the King of Denmark at Flensburg, 1854. Creator: Smyth
Arrival of the King of Denmark at Flensburg, 1854. Opening of the British-built Royal Danish Railway by Frederick VII, King of Denmark. Present were Samuel Morton Peto, a partner of the firm of Peto, Brassey, and Betts, and engineer George Parker Bidder. The king arrives on the Cygnus, which carried...an assortment of fireworks...which permitted the inhabitants...to be favoured with a pyrotechnic display which much delighted the natives; between whom and the English the best possible feeling exists. This is owing, not only to the English capital poured into their country both by the formation of the line, and by the North of Europe Steam Company opening up numerous British markets for native produce, but to the conciliatory spirit and excellent tact of all the English railway officials and employees resident in Denmark...The Flensburgers were most enthusiastic in the loyalty of the reception of their King'. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, titled "Arrival of the King of Denmark at Flensburg, 1854," we witness a historic moment as Frederick VII, the King of Denmark, makes his grand entrance into the port city of Flensburg. The image, captured by the renowned photographer Smyth, documents the opening ceremony of the newly built Royal Danish Railway, an engineering marvel of the time. The King's arrival on the majestic steamship Cygnus was an eagerly anticipated event, with the local populace eager to greet their monarch. The Cygnus carried an assortment of fireworks, which permitted the inhabitants of Flensburg to be favored with a pyrotechnic display that much delighted the natives. The harmonious relationship between the Danes and the English was evident, as the English investment in the railway and the North of Europe Steam Company's market expansion had brought significant economic benefits to the Danish people. The photograph captures the jubilant atmosphere of the occasion, with the King standing proudly on the deck of the Cygnus, waving to the cheering crowds. Surrounding him are Samuel Morton Peto, a partner of the firm of Peto, Brassey, and Betts, and engineer George Parker Bidder, who played instrumental roles in the construction of the railway. The Flensburgers were most enthusiastic in their loyalty and reception of their King, as evidenced by the sea of uplifted hats and waving flags. This photograph is a testament to the power of diplomacy, economic cooperation, and engineering prowess in fostering strong relationships between nations. It serves as a reminder of the impact that such collaborative efforts can have on the lives of people and the development of infrastructure that connects communities.
