EDITORS COMMENTS
(Abolition of the tariff - Discounted auction), a captivating lithograph by the renowned French caricaturist Cham, dates back to 1866. This intriguing image is part of the "Actualites" series published in the French periodical "Le Charivari" on Monday, 5 February 1866. The print depicts a lively auction scene, with three horse-drawn carriages and their coaches lined up in a race. The first and second coaches, manned by three and two coaches respectively, are being sold at a discounted price. The auctioneer, dressed in formal attire, stands confidently at the center, holding a gavel and looking expectantly at the bidders. The third and fourth coaches, with only one coach each, are priced lower, at 0.75 centimes. The scene is filled with humor and satire, as the auctioneer, despite his high price tag of 75 centimes, remains silent, much to the surprise of the crowd. The caricature's title, "Le commissaire Priseur: 75c aucun cocher ne dit un mot?" (The auctioneer: 75c, no coachman speaks?), adds to the humorous tone of the print. This historic artwork is a fascinating glimpse into 19th-century European culture and society, and showcases the skillful use of lithography as a medium for political and social commentary. The print is now part of the collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), a testament to its enduring value as a significant piece of heritage art.
