Hadrians Wall
Hadrians Wall also called the Roman Wall, Picts Wall, or Vallum Hadriani in Latin, was a defensive fortification in the Roman province of Britannia, begun in 122 AD during the reign of the emperor Hadrian. It ran from the banks of the River Tyne near the North Sea to the Solway Firth on the Irish Sea. It had a stone base and a stone wall. There were milecastles with two turrets in between. There was a fort about every five Roman miles. From north to south, the wall comprised a ditch, wall, military way and vallum (another ditch with adjoining mounds). It is thought that the milecastles were staffed with static garrisons, whereas the forts had fighting garrisons of infantry and cavalry. In addition to the walls defensive military role, its gates may have been used as customs posts.
A significant portion of the wall still stands and can be followed on foot along the adjoining Hadrians Wall Path. It is the most popular tourist attraction in Northern England and was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Hadrian's Wall, a remarkable testament to Roman engineering and military prowess. Also known as the Roman Wall, Picts Wall, or Vallum Hadriani in Latin, this defensive fortification was constructed during the reign of Emperor Hadrian in 122 AD. Stretching from the banks of River Tyne near the North Sea to Solway Firth on the Irish Sea, it consisted of a sturdy stone base and wall with milecastles and turrets interspersed along its length. The image captures both the grandeur and resilience of this ancient structure that played a crucial role in protecting Britannia from external threats. The wall is flanked by a ditch, military way, and vallum – an additional ditch with adjoining mounds – further enhancing its defensive capabilities. Today, visitors can still experience sections of this historic marvel by walking along the adjacent Hadrian's Wall Path. Its enduring presence has made it Northern England's most popular tourist attraction while also earning recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
