EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures a piece of history in the form of a beautiful Scottish dress from Lanarkshire, East Kilbride, dating back to around 1866-1867. Made from silk and cotton, this dress is a true work of art with intricate hand-stitching and machine-stitching.
The bright blue corded silk paired with silk satin gives this dress an elegant and luxurious look. The round neckline can be transformed into a square-cut decolletage by folding back the centre front panels, adding versatility to the design. The frill trim and button fastening add delicate details to the bodice.
The full-length sleeves feature wide bell-shaped cuffs, while the skirt is constructed with gored panels and cartridge pleating at the back for added fullness. With additional length to accommodate a cage-crinoline underneath, this dress also boasts a slight train for added drama.
Worn by a member of the Reid family at Wester Kittochside Farm, this dress is not only a fashion statement but also holds sentimental value. It serves as a reminder of the craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into clothing during this time period.
