A rapid sketch from the Castilian'. The artist has concentrated on the tonal relationship between sea, sky and land. An outline of land is shown in profile on the left as a dark grey mass loosely painted. The sea is layers of rapidly applied paint in tones of grey becoming darker closer to the horizon. The movement of waves is indicated as small dashes of paint varying in tone from dark grey to white. The sky is shown in lighter shades of grey and the paint is thicker on the right and tinted lemon to indicate the light from the sun. The reflection from this light plays across the surface of the water on the right. Everett sailed in the steamer, Castilian, from London to the Mediterranean, between October 1937 and February 1938.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the essence of a seascape from the 'Castilian' in 1938, painted by the talented artist John Everett. The artwork showcases Everett's ability to capture the tonal relationship between sea, sky, and land with incredible detail and skill.
In this piece, Everett focuses on portraying the different elements of nature in a harmonious way. The outline of land on the left is depicted as a dark grey mass, while layers of rapidly applied paint create varying tones of grey in the sea. The movement of waves is beautifully captured through small dashes of paint ranging from dark grey to white.
The sky is portrayed in lighter shades of grey, with thicker paint on the right side tinted lemon to represent sunlight. The reflection from this light dances across the water's surface on the right side, adding depth and dimension to the scene.
Everett's experience sailing on the 'Castilian' shines through in this artwork, as he expertly conveys a sense of movement and tranquility within his composition. This print serves as a timeless reminder of nature's beauty and power, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in its serene atmosphere.
