England before the Norman Conquest (litho)
8661400 England before the Norman Conquest (litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: England before the Norman Conquest. Following the withdrawal of the Romans the history of Britain becomes exceedingly obscure. It is known, however, that the country was raided by Picts and Scots, and to subdue them the Britons called the Saxons to their aid. But later the Saxons made subjects of their former allies and settled in the kingdoms of Essex, Sussex and Wessex. Other settlers were the Jutes in Kent and southern Hampshire, and the Angles in the country furthest east. England was subsequently harassed by the Danes until their overthrow by Alfred the Great in 878. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920).); © Look and Learn

EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures a glimpse of England before the Norman Conquest, showcasing the tumultuous and complex history of the nation. Following the departure of the Romans, Britain faced raids from Picts and Scots, leading to alliances with Saxons who eventually became rulers themselves in kingdoms such as Essex, Sussex, and Wessex. The Jutes settled in Kent and southern Hampshire, while the Angles claimed territory in the east.
The country endured further turmoil with Danish invasions until Alfred the Great's triumph over them in 878. This illustration for Hutchinson's History of Nations offers a visual narrative of England's early struggles and conquests.
The black-and-white imagery adds a sense of antiquity to this historical scene, highlighting key moments that shaped England's destiny. From political coups to territorial disputes, this print encapsulates centuries-old conflicts that laid the foundation for modern-day Britain.
As we gaze upon this litho print, we are transported back in time to witness the intricate tapestry of events that defined England before William the Conqueror's arrival. It serves as a reminder of how far this nation has come since its turbulent beginnings and invites us to reflect on our shared heritage.
